Glorious weather greeted a particularly good crowd as The Sharks and Sunfoil Dolphins came together to contest the “Clash of the Kings” at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead.
Batting first, the Dolphins posted a competitive score of 157 all out, led by a typically blockbusting 39 off just 17 balls from Loots Bosman with David Miller contributing 35.
Terra Mthembu was the stand out player in the fielding innings, taking a catch and picking up three valuable wickets although Marius Joubert also contributed well with the ball and Patrick Lambie chipped in with a pair of wickets himself.
The Dolphins might not have expected quite the effort put in from The Sharks who certainly gave it their all in the bowling department.
The Sharks quietly went about the job of accumulating runs with a strong opening partnership from Lambie and Jacques Botes which realised over 50 runs. A big six from Botes and three fours on his way to 32 runs helped set the tone while Lambie contributed two fours and three sixes for his 55 ball innings that brought about 58 runs.
With the bowlers not making life too difficult for The Sharks batsmen, the boundaries flowed towards the end of their 20 overs with Riaan Viljoen and JP Pietersen in particular enjoying the charity, the duo adding a healthy 40 run partnership at the death off less than three overs to bring themselves within a whisker of the Dolphins’ 157 runs.
Eventually, The Sharks ended on 155 for the loss of five wickets, three runs short of a dramatic win.
But the weather played its part as did the cricket and rugby players to bring plenty of fun to supporters who were certainly entertained from first ball to last.
The biggest winners though are The Sharks “Making a Difference” campaign for charity as well as the Dolphins’ Development Programme, R20 000 from the proceeds of this match going to each.
Pat Lambie was voted Man of the Match in the end for his solid contribution with bat and ball, saying afterwards, “It was really nice to spend some time out there in the middle and I thoroughly enjoyed myself out there. It was an honour to do this for a good cause.”
Keegan Daniel, who captained the side, said: “It was great to be a part of this crowd-pleasing game, hats off to the Dolphins for winning. We really enjoyed this event and we’re proud to have been a part of this initiative.”
